Indonesia has been famous for years as a popular destination for birdwatching. There are more than 17,000 islands in this country geographically located between the continents of Asia and Australia, as well as the oceans of the Indian and the Pacific. This strategic position makes this archipelago rich of bird diversity. There are hundreds of birding sites spread throughout big and small islands of Indonesia such as Sumatra, Java, Bali, Flores, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Halmahera, Seram, Kei, Aru islands, Tanimbar, Waigeo, Gam, Batanta, Misool, Salawati, Biak, Numfor, Yapen and New Guinea (particularly West Papua). West Papua province, located in the eastern region of Indonesia, is a must see region for avid birders because of its endemic birds of paradise. According to field guide book: Birds of New Guinea written by Thane K. Pratt and Bruce Beehler, there are 41 species of Birds of Paradise known to science, 37 of them can be found in New Guinea. West Papua is the western half region of the island that is within the territory of Indonesia.
